3 ways to support your favorite small business

Open sign on a business door

This week, the U.S. Small Business Administration celebrated Small Business Week. They recognized small businesses for their achievements, and helped bring awareness to entrepreneurship in the U.S. Entrepreneurs create two out of every three jobs in U.S. – so they play a huge role in our economy.

There are over 30 million small businesses in the U.S., so chances are, you know a small business owner! Small businesses thrive through the support of their local communities, and you can be a part of that. To help you do just that, here are three easy – and FREE! – ways you can support your favorite small business, entrepreneur, or artist!

1. Interact with them on social media.

You already like and follow all of your favorite businesses, products, and brands on social media. That’s enough, right? It’s a great way to keep up on the latest news, but there’s more to it than that. Social media platforms like Facebook are constantly changing what you see in your news feeds – and specifically limiting what you see from business pages. When you interact with a post on a business page, it ensures that you’ll continue to see posts from them. It also bumps up that page in your friends’ news feeds, too, helping small businesses reach a larger audience.

See past a post you like while scrolling your social media, by a business you like?

  • Click that thumbs up button to like the post!
  • If the post has content that you really love, leave a quick comment.
  • Think your friends would like the content too? Share it on your page!

These are quick, easy actions you can take that help your favorite small business, while doing something that you’re already doing.

While you’re at it – check out Way Creative on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. We’d love to see you there!

2. Review them online.

Do you read online reviews before you try a new product or service? So does everyone else. When you get great service at a restaurant or business, do them a favor by leaving a Google review. For small businesses who provide a service and don’t have a brick and mortar location (like us!), rate or review them on Facebook. Reviews help other customers decide to choose that business or service over another.

3. Refer them to friends and family.

Overhear someone asking for a recommendation for a product or service, and know a small business that offers it? Refer them! As the old saying goes, the highest compliment a business can get is the referral of a customer’s friends and family. A recommendation in person is great. Or, if you have a friend asking for a referral online, tag your favorite small business or drop their website address.

4. (BONUS TIP!) Buy from a small business when you need a product or service.

Ok, this tip isn’t free. Next time you’re in the market for a product or service, think of who you might already know that offers it. Or, ask friends or search online to find recommendations in your local community. It’s always great to get introduced to a new favorite business. Not only are you supporting the small business owner, you’re also supporting your local economy. And don’t you want to spend your money where you live?

It’s Been a Great 2017!

We’ve had the opportunity to work with some inspiring organizations and dear friends this year, and we couldn’t be more grateful. From uniting for Grand Rapids Public Schools through the Grand Rapids Student Advancement Foundation, to promoting the awesome shows, casts, and crews at Circle Theatre, to recapping amazing events by The Midwest Tech Project that expose students to the tech field, to seeing the role that music plays in student’s lives in the Notre Dame Children’s Choir, it is truly our honor to help share the stories that shape our communities. We love the work that these and other organizations in Grand Rapids are doing to make a difference in people’s lives.

We appreciate you!

Thank you to our amazing clients and business partners for working with us in 2017. We also have to give a huge shout-out to our friends and families for their support and referrals as we continue to build our small business. We appreciate you all, and couldn’t do this without you!

Wishing you all a very happy holiday season and the best in 2018,

the g code gala: celebrating the midwest tech project

Tech professionals mingle at the G Code Gala.

The Midwest Tech Project celebrated the first year of their work at the G Code Gala on February 23, 2017. The event was held at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. The community was updated on the Midwest Tech Project’s achievements over the past year, and gave an overview of new initiatives coming in 2017. It was a fun event, and was a great opportunity for networking, mingling, and learning more about the technology industry in West Michigan.

The G Code Gala

We had the opportunity to produce a recap video of the G Code Gala. The video features words from AJ Hills IV and Jonathan Jelks, MidWest Tech Project Co-founders. Hills and Jelks speak on the past and future endeavors of the  Midwest Tech Project. You’ll also hear from sponsors and supporters of the organization, including Joe Jones, 2nd Ward City Commissioner, Mike Morin of Start Garden, Brittany Hunter of Atomic Object, and Jennifer Cline and John Rumery of Grand Circus.

The Midwest Tech Project focuses on connecting Black and Latino students to STEM education and the technology industry. The goal is to help students create lifelong career opportunities. The organization is one of our newer clients, and we are so proud to partner with them and help support the work that they’re doing in our community. We are committed to their ideals of supporting the students in our city, encouraging interest in the STEM fields, and most importantly, diversifying the tech industry in Grand Rapids and beyond.

You can help support the work of the Midwest Tech Project in a number of ways:

  • Become a strategic partner
  • Host students for a tour if you work in the technology industry
  • Become a mentor

Learn more and connect with the Midwest Tech Project on their website and Facebook page.

It’s our passion to use our technology skills to serve our community and support organizations working for good. Is your nonprofit looking for video and media services to help support your work and mission in our community? Contact us today to get started!

Tech Fair: La Tecnologia Es El Futuro

Way Creative LLC at Tech Fair: La Tecnologia Es El Futuro

We recently had the opportunity to shoot for The Midwest Tech Project at their 1st ever Tech Fair: La Tecnologia Es El Futuro. The event was held at Cesar E. Chavez Elementary School in Grand Rapids, MI on January 26, 2017. This was the first ever bilingual Tech Fair held in Grand Rapids, MI and over 230 guests attended the event. Check out the highlight video we made of the event below.

Tech Fair: La Tecnologia Es El Futuro was incredibly successful at exposing the inner-city youth of Grand Rapids’ Southwest side to all of the possibilities and opportunities in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math(STEM) fields. The event featured reps from local tech firms and nonprofits as well as larger companies. There was also plenty of representation from local colleges and universities. Some of the tables at the event featured things like a 3D Printer from the Kent County ISD or a kickball-shooting robot from Code Red Robotics Club, built and operated by high school students. There were also: Drones, Virtual Reality Simulators, DSLR Cameras, 3D Modeling Programs and FREE Food for all in attendance from a local Latino restaurant.

Way Creative LLC is proud to work with local Nonprofits like The Midwest Tech Project. We support our local community as much as possible because it’s important if the ultimate goal is improving the quality of life for everyone. Large scale change doesn’t happen on a large scale–it happens in small, incremental stages. Events like Tech Fair: La Tecnologia Es El Futuro are essential if we, as a human race, are to reach our highest potential. So, we encourage getting out and getting involved. Find something that you have great passion in and donate whatever you can, be it your time, money or skills. Be a driving force for change in your community!
